Description

In 1799 William Wordsworth went on a walking tour of the Lake District with his friend and fellow poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He fell in love with Grasmere and Dove Cottage and within a few months he had set up home here with his sister, Dorothy, to live the life of a poet, at one with his surroundings.

While living in this inspirational setting Wordsworth produced the most famous and best-loved of his poems including, 'I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud,' and Dorothy wrote her famous Grasmere Journals. Even now, it is easy to see how they were influenced by the beautiful landscape and simple way of life.

Directions

South of Grasmere village, on the A591 Kendal to Keswick road.
Leave the M6 at junction 36 and follow the signs for Kendal, Windermere and Ambleside.

From the north, leave the M6 at junction 40 and follow the signs first to Keswick, then to Grasmere/Ambleside.

The nearest train station is Windermere (8 miles away) and there are regular buses - service 555 or 599.

Opening Times

During the Summer months, from 1 March 2012 until 31 October 2012, we are open every day at 9.30am and last admission is at 5pm. The museum and cottage both close at 5.30pm.

During the winter, 1 November 2011 to 29 February 2012, we are open every day at 9.30am and last admission is at 4pm. The museum and cottage both close at 4.30pm.
