Description
2000 years of Scottish history under one roof! Callendar House presents permanent displays, a changing programme of temporary exhibitions, archives, gift shop, The Park Gallery and Teashop at the Stables.
Situated amidst magnificent park and woodland, Callendar House tells stories spanning 2000 years of Scottish history. Through wars, rebellions and the industrial revolution, the house has played host to many great historical figures over the centuries, including Mary, Queen of Scots, Cromwell and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Step back in time in the working Georgian kitchen, see fascinating items from Falkirk Museum's vast collection, or enjoy one of the exciting temporary exhibitions. Three permanent displays offer visitors an opportunity to learn more about the House, the people who inhabited it, and the part they played in shaping our nation's history. The Story of Callendar House begins in the 11th century when the King's representative the Thane of Callendar built a house in the shadow of the Antonine Wall. Journey through four turbulent centuries of ownership by the Livingston family, which ended in the sale of the house and estate in the 18th century to the Forbes Family. William Forbes' Falkirk 1750-1850 looks at the industrial and social revolutions of the period through the eyes of William Forbes, copper merchant and self-made man who purchased Callendar House in 1783. With the House providing an excellent vantage point for the Antonine Wall World Heritage Site, the Antonine Wall display in our first floor gallery looks at the it's construction and use. In addition, the 1850s library houses the Falkirk Council Archive, where a wealth of material on Falkirk and the surrounding area's extraordinary heritage is held, and visitors can also enjoy browsing in the Museum gift shop, where items have been carefully selected to complement the House and its history. Finally, the newly opened Park Gallery in the Large Gallery on the ground floor offers a changing programme of contemporary art and craft exhibitions by local, national and international artists and makers. Our catering facility, the Teashop at the Stables, has reflected the culinary heritage demonstrated in the kitchen at Callendar House, in its menu. Open daily (closed Sundays between October and March), visitors can enjoy a range of lunch options, snacks and home-baking.
